A serene terracotta bust by Australian sculptor Dorothea Johnson (1903–1987), known for her intimate portrait studies and figurative works in clay and bronze.
Hand-modelled with delicate incised detailing, this work portrays a young woman with downcast eyes, floral headdress, and stylised spiral earrings. The unglazed terracotta surface brings warmth and texture, set upon a simple circular base.
Dorothea Johnson studied at East Sydney Technical College and exhibited with the Society of Women Painters and the Royal Art Society before establishing herself as a studio sculptor. Her works from the 1950s–70s often explore femininity, serenity, and cultural identity through a modernist lens.
