A sculptural expression of 1970s design, this modular lounge suite by Hukla, Japan combines the warmth of mI’d century coil with the technical precision that was true foundation of their business.
Design & Form
This suite is upholstered in its original beige corduroy velvet, a fabric that defined the decade with its tactile richness and durability. Deep button tufting across the seat and backs enhances the plush comfort while creating a striking quilted effect. Rolled headrests soften the modular block form, lending the design a sense of casual elegance.
Each module is fully upholstered, allowing for a flexible arrangement: configure as a sweeping lounge, a corner formation, or as individual seats. This adaptability was central to Hukla’s design philosophy, reflecting a shift in the 1970s towards more informal, versatile living spaces.
About Hukla
Founded in Germany in 1936 by August Huppertsberg, Hukla (a contraction of Huppertsberg und Klaussner) quickly established itself as one of Europe’s premier seating specialists. By the 1960s–70s, the brand had expanded internationally, with production and distribution partnerships in Japan to meet growing demand in Asia and Australasia.
Known for precision engineering, robust coil-spring construction, and innovative comfort designs, Hukla positioned itself alongside contemporaries such as De Sede (Switzerland) and Ligne Roset (France). Their modular lounge systems of the 1970s epitomised the era’s ethos: flexible, sculptural furniture built to last a lifetime.
Today, vintage Hukla lounges are increasingly sought-after by collectors and design lovers, appreciated for their durability, comfort, and authentic retro aesthetic.
Dimensions
5 chairs each 63 wide x 85 deep x 35 to seat
Condition
Very good vintage condition. The suite has been deep cleaned and one chair has had a repair to the front of one cushion. There are wear marks to sone aspects of the velvet - particularly in the corners of the cushions where legs have rubbed, as expected for age but overall it presents beautifully. The foam bases are excellent and supportive. All tufting is intact and each cushion is held in place by a combination of Velcro and stitching. Cushions can be removed for cleaning or replacing if reupholstering is your preference.
