A superb set of four Italian-made Cesca stools dating to the 1970s — an enduring design that sits at the intersection of Bauhaus modernism and warm natural materiality.

Originally designed in 1928 by Hungarian architect and Bauhaus designer Marcel Breuer, the Cesca chair revolutionised furniture design through its use of tubular metal and handwoven cane. It was the first chair to successfully combine a cantilevered tubular frame with a natural rattan seat and back — allowing the chair to “float” visually without rear legs.

Inspired by the lightweight steel tubing of bicycle frames, Breuer’s design embodied the Bauhaus principle of merging art, industry and functional beauty.

Today, the Cesca is widely regarded as one of the most important chair designs of the 20th century, with an original example held in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

By the mid-century period, Italian manufacturers — particularly through companies such as Gavina — began producing their own versions of Breuer’s design, introducing subtle variations in tone, material and finish while maintaining the iconic form.

These 1970s Italian examples are beautifully executed and elevate the classic Cesca silhouette with a warmer, more luxurious material palette.

Features

• Cantilevered tubular frames finished in iridescent brass (not chrome)

• Handwoven rattan seats and backs

• Gently rounded timber frames

• Counter / bar height

The iridescent brass gives these a softer, more architectural presence — shifting between gold and bronze depending on light — making them ideal for contemporary kitchens or stone-topped islands where chrome can feel too harsh.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition.

• Rattan is perfect — tight and intact

• Frames are excellent with light age-appropriate patina

• Structurally sound and ready for everyday use
