Qing Dynasty Chinese Sideboard

Qing Dynasty Chinese Sideboard

Sold

Circa 1880 | Northern China

A beautifully proportioned antique Chinese sideboard, richly patinated and steeped in history. Crafted from dense huanghuali (a type of rosewood), this piece features twin drawers over double panelled doors, framed by elegantly carved side spandrels and a pierced apron — traditional motifs symbolising prosperity and protection.

Brass pulls and pin-latch hardware remain intact, although the pin to the bottom cupboard is missing. Subtle wear to the feet and soft rounding to the edges speak to its authentic age and long life of use. This sideboard likely originated from Shanxi or Hebei province and would have been used to store ceremonial objects or textiles in a scholar’s hall or merchant’s home.  Masterfully constructed entirely without the use of any nails or screws.

Both decorative and functional, this is a versatile cabinet that adds warmth and narrative to any interior — from traditional to contemporary.
