A refined and elegant coffee table attributed to celebrated designer Paul Kafka, crafted in Sydney during the 1950s.

This piece features a highly polished black Vitrolite glass top, a material prized in the mid-20th century for its sleek, reflective surface and durability. The top is supported by a finely made timber frame with slender, subtly splayed legs and book matched veneer — a design detail that reflects Kafka’s unique blend of European elegance and modernist restraint.

Kafka’s workshop was renowned for producing bespoke furniture for discerning clients, often in collaboration with architects of the period. His work is now recognised as among the most sophisticated examples of Australian modernist design, with examples held in the Powerhouse Museum and sought after by collectors worldwide.
