A masterpiece of Persian weaving, this early 20th century Kashan carpet is a handmade work of art.  Measuring a superb 2.3 x 3.25 metres, it commands presence in any interior — from a modernist space looking for a bold anchor to a classic home celebrating tradition.

Dye detail

  • The madder red field is made from natural vegetable dye (warm, slightly variegated, not harsh).
  • The deep indigo blues are also consistent with vegetable indigo.
  • The pinks and some brighter yellows (especially those little floral details in the border) are more likely to be early synthetic dyes

Design & Details

  • Origin: Kashan, Central Persia
  • Date: Circa 1920s–1940s
  • Materials: Hand-spun wool pile on cotton foundation
  • Technique: Asymmetrical (Persian) knotting, medium–fine weave
  • Colours: Rich madder red field, deep indigo medallion and borders, ivory spandrels, accents of soft green, sky blue, and salmon pink
  • Size: 3.25 x 2.3

At the heart lies a navy medallion framed by scrolling arabesques, surrounded by a field of stylised blossoms and vines. The ivory corner spandrels create balance, while the navy main border features repeating floral bouquets, a motif known as the “Shah Abbas” pattern.

Condition

Owned by one family for over 70 years this gorgeous rug is In beautiful vintage condition with an even pile and natural age patina. Edges and fringes remain largely intact. This carpet has been carefully maintained and presents exceptionally well for its age.

Provenance & Importance

Kashan weavers have long been regarded among the finest in Persia and a piece of this size would have taken 2 people 12 months to complete. Their work from this period — particularly in oversize formats — was often commissioned for palaces and grand residences, or made for discerning export markets. Today, such pieces are increasingly scarce, cherished not only for their artistry but also for their enduring durability.

Styling Notes

This rug’s scale and symmetry make it perfect for:

  • A large living room beneath a statement lounge and coffee table
  • A dining space where its floral borders frame the setting
  • An entrance hall or gallery room to create immediate impact
