Circa 1920s–1950s | Southern China
A striking example of early 20th-century Chinese export craftsmanship, this hand-carved chest is constructed from richly grained camphor wood—prized for its aromatic and naturally insect-repellent qualities.
The exterior features a dramatic ebonized finish contrasted by deep relief carvings of mountainous landscapes, river scenes, and traditional sailing junks. Diagonal composition and circular medallions add visual rhythm, while a cloud-shaped brass clasp provides a refined finishing touch.
The interior is clean and beautifully preserved, showcasing the golden tones and natural figure of the camphor wood. Perfect for storing linens, textiles, or as a sculptural statement piece at the foot of a bed or under a window.
A fine and functional heirloom, blending artistry with utility.
