A striking and collectible coffee table by Gerard Havekes — artist, sculptor and designer whose work helped define the look of Australian mid-century interiors.
This table features a solid timber frame with bold square legs and an inset mosaic of hand-made, hand-glazed ceramic tiles. Each tile is individually formed, glazed and fired, creating a unique rhythm of colour and texture — deep umbers, teal greens, smoky whites and a pop of rich red. No two tables by Havekes are ever the same.
What makes furniture items by Gerard Havekes particularly important is that Havekes designed AND fabricated both the table and the tiles himself. Many ceramic-top tables of the era used commercially supplied tiles — but Havekes approached furniture as an extension of his sculptural practice. The result is more like functional art than furniture.
Born in the Netherlands and later working in Australia, Havekes became known for his expressive ceramics, public sculptures and architectural collaborations. His furniture pieces were produced in small numbers and are now highly sought after by collectors of mid-century Australian design.
This table presents beautifully — strong, sculptural and wonderfully tactile — and works equally well in contemporary and vintage settings.
