Antique Japanese Export Curio Cabinet with elaborate detailing

Antique Japanese Export Curio Cabinet with elaborate detailing

Sold

Circa 1880 |

An extraordinary example of 1800s craftsmanship, this antique Japanese export curio cabinet is a masterclass in both artistry and construction. Designed for the display of treasured objects, its asymmetrical arrangement of shelves, glazed compartments, and finely carved panels reflects the aesthetic ideals of a traditional scholar’s cabinet, reinterpreted for the Western market during the height of chinoiserie fascination.

Handles made from intricately carved bone (one of which is missing) act as a full stop to the intricate figural inlays—rendered in bone, lacquer, ivory and lacquer—depicting serene scenes of scholarly life and childhood, rich with symbolic meaning.

Finely pierced and relief-carved back panels feature phoenixes or cranes swirling through stylized clouds, symbolising rebirth and immortality. A series of curved corner shelves and niches add depth, light, and architectural drama. The piece is supported by a carved apron and shaped feet, elevating its silhouette while underscoring its ceremonial quality.

This is not simply a cabinet—it is a statement piece, rich in cultural narrative and destined to be an heirloom.

Dimensions: 1.42 high x 1.03 wide x 38 deep
