A striking handwoven Turkmen ensi rug, traditionally created as a door hanging for the entrance of a yurt although the size of this example suggests use as a floor rug. Woven in deep crimson, rust, and dark indigo tones, its geometric lattice design is punctuated by symbolic motifs in ivory and orange. These motifs were believed to protect the threshold and welcome guests—a functional textile rich with meaning.

Dating to early 20th century, this piece shows the bold tribal character of Central Asian weaving. The strong symmetry and repeating motifs give it both rhythm and movement, while the fringed ends and intricate border add refinement.
