Grant Featherston resolved the design for this chair when riding on a tram in Melbourne. He was seeking a solution to the manufacture of a curved frame without incorporating the inherent steep costs associated with it. While travelling on the tram, Grant began tearing his ticket and came to the realisation that he could create a curve using pieces of cut plywood for a fraction of the cost. What he created, was the R160. This is a legend of a chair and this example has a black base, which, contrary to belief was one of the original options offered by Featherston. We have had this chair reupholstered in high quality pink velvet to reflect its feminine curves.
